January has been tough so far, and being the beginning of a decade has made it worse. I find goal setting exhausting in an ordinary year. The idea of goal setting for the decade is like sitting in a barrel of concrete as it hardens.

Funny, yes, but now, half the month is gone. I’ve already tried getting up earlier, creating a daily calendar, and cancelling my subscription to Netflix, but to no avail. The brain fog continued.
So, if setting goals is setting me in concrete, I decided to stop trying to name what I want and take a good look at where I am. Then, I looked for my nemesis.

My Nemesis

Create a Nemesis Avatar
Instead of picking one person as my designated nemesis, I decided to create a nemesis avatar. I listed the people that I respect and admire and identified their successes. Then with a picture of me open in Photoshop, I annotated it with their accomplishments and their positive traits. As I did this, I could feel my January fog lifting and my motivation soaring. To keep my nemesis avatar front and center, I printed my composite and posted it on my white board.
Who is your Nemesis?
When you keep it positive, your nemesis will help you visualize your goals and keep you moving towards them by looking at their accomplishments. It can spotlight areas where you need to improve by looking at the truths underneath their criticism. It can promote bonding and loyalty in your group by creating a common “enemy”.
If you decide to share the rivalry with your nemesis, make sure that person can keep the relationship positive and healthy. This could be the secret sauce for your and their next accomplishment.

You may not need an avatar to improve your motivation and take your performance to the next level. You may already know someone who will light your competitive spark. It could be someone you know personally or someone who is one of your online contacts. Once you identify him, her, or them, list their qualities and accomplishments and think about yourself has already having all of them.
